Sheets Integration: How to sort columns or rows in the spreadsheet on Google Sheets

For your spreadsheet data to be correctly interpreted by Reportei, you need to classify the type of each column/row depending on how your spreadsheet is structured. This step ensures that the data can be read, grouped, and correctly displayed in charts, tables, metrics, and filters.

However, before starting the configuration, it is important to check two fundamental points in your spreadsheet.

1. Identify the format of the spreadsheet

First, you need to check how the data is arranged in your spreadsheets. To do this, see which of the following structures your spreadsheet falls into:

  • Vertical spreadsheets In this structure, titles should be in the first row with the data below them.
  • Horizontal spreadsheets Structure where titles are in the first column with data laid out beside them in the subsequent columns.

2. Decimal separator

Check if the decimal separator used in the spreadsheet, whether a dot or comma, is the same as configured in your project within Reportei.

If they are different, it will be necessary to adjust either the spreadsheet or the project settings so that they use the same separator.

⚠️ Attention: Changing the project settings will impact all the reports and dashboards linked to it. Therefore, we recommend making the change in the spreadsheet.

Once this is done, we move on to the stage of identifying and classifying the types of columns.

Types of columns/rows

During linking, you will need to indicate the type of each column/row. If the spreadsheet fits the vertical format, the type classification will be based on each column. If it fits the horizontal format, the type classification will be based on each row of the spreadsheet.

Currently, it is possible to classify with the following types:

  • Metric
  • Dimension
  • Date
  • Dimension/Metric
  • Not identified

Metric type column

They are columns with numerical values that are typically used in calculations.

  • Examples of use:
    • sum
    • calculate average
    • count
  • Examples of Metric type data::
    • Invested amount
    • Reach
    • Clicks
  • Where it can be used:
    • Number widgets
    • Graph series
    • Numerical columns in tables

Dimension type columns

They are those columns used to group or filter the data, usually with texts or categories.

  • Examples of data:
    • Campaign name
    • Channel
    • Ad type
  • Where it can be used:
    • Filters in number cards
    • Grouping in graphs
    • Text columns in tables

Columns with Dimension/Metric type

They are columns that can be used both as metric and dimension, i.e., they can represent numerical values or categories.

  • Examples of data:
    • Country
    • Traffic source
    • Device
  • Where it can be used:
    • Anywhere dimensions or metrics are accepted.

Date type columns

These are columns that contain date values.

  • Examples of data:
    • Hiring date
    • Campaign date
    • Month

Where it can be used:

  • Period filters for reports, dashboards, widgets.
  • Time-based grouping in graphs
  • Display in table columns

Unidentified type columns

When the system cannot automatically recognize the content of the column, it will come as Not identified type.

These columns need to be reviewed and manually classified for use. Otherwise, columns classified with this type will be ignored in metric creation and data analysis.

Final tip

Correct classification of columns ensures accurate data interpretation in all visualizations. If any column is incorrectly classified or outdated, it may compromise data transfer. So, when importing your spreadsheet, pay attention to these points.

⚠️ Important After completing the data classification in Reportei, it will not be possible to edit it. Therefore, avoid making changes to the structure of the original spreadsheet, such as moving, adding, or deleting columns. These changes may compromise the correct reading of the data. If you need to make any structural adjustments, it will be necessary to perform a new integration of the spreadsheet with Reportei.
